Computers

Saturday, October 8th, 2005

Last night, I was typing another blog entitled "To Migrate or Not to Migrate" but unfortunately I lost it. I don’t know how it happened, suddenly the page I was working on was lost and I wasn’t able to retrieve it anymore.  These are the times I really hate computers. Sure, it does make our lives better and our work much easier such typing, computing, lay-outing, etc. but in a split-second, it can also ruin our lives.  What if I lost something needed for my job and urgent and our client was waiting for it? Well, I’m thankful it wasn’t the case, otherwise, I’ll be dead meat and maybe I’m already jobless by now.

From the the very first time I’ve had a relationship with a computer, I’ve had a lot of frustrating experiences such as my files were either lost or corrupted, files change its format because i’m using a different version of the software, or worse my computer have simply crashed for some unknown reasons.  Maybe, at some point in your life you experienced these things as well.  I’m sure you know how exasperating it is when you spend hours to work on something very important to the point you are already cramming to meet the deadline and yet in a matter of seconds, you lose everything so you need to start all over again.  I’m glad I only lost a blog last night.  So for now, I’ll just sigh, make this blog and hope that next time it won’t happen again though I think it will because computers are not so smart, than it seems ; )

Carless for a Few Days

Sunday, October 2nd, 2005

I was carless since Wednesday morning!!!!! You can imagine my horror, when all of a sudden my car doesn’t want to start at all.  Not that, I can’t go to work taking a public transport.  Believe me, if there’s a reliable transport system here in Doha, I’d rather be taking a bus or train even if I will need to walk a little bit going to the bus stop or train station.  But my biggest problem is that the only public transport available here are taxis.

On my first day of work, i took a taxi going home and it was a nightmare.  I had to wait almost one hour before I found an empty one and the driver was a little bit hesitant when he I told him I live in Old Airport.  I could understand his unwillingness since Airport Road is under construction and not only airport road, almost all roads are being repaired in preparation for the 2006 Asian Games.  Niether I would want to be stuck in the middle of the traffic, God knows when you could move an inch.

I do not know until when I’ll be carless but my husband told me that he can only bring our car to the service center on Sunday and only then we would know how long would the repair be.  I was lucky though, because my neighbor-friend works in the same area so she can drop me in the morning and my officemate can take me home in the afternoon.  But if by any reason I need to leave home or the office at an earier or later time, then I’ll be in big trouble so I decided to rent a car for a few days, until our car is fixed.

I didn’t know that renting a car here in Doha can drive you nuts as well until I called more than 10 car rental companies and no one has an available car meeting my requirements—small car with automatic transmission—because all their cars is out.  Okay, I can drive manual gear but I wouldn’t try to here in Doha even if I’m dying for a car and for heaven’s sake, I don’t need an Opel for 120 Riyals/day or a four-wheel-drive for 300   Riyals/day (that is 4500 pesos/day).   Duhhhh????

I give up!!!! I think, I can still manage to be carless for a few days. All I can say is Good Luck to me!!!  I just hope that I my car will be fixed soon.
